The company was incorporated by Duluth and Winnipeg Railroad interests in 1892 to build and operate dock and terminal facilities to meet the demand posed by the burgeoning iron ore industry in northern Minnesota. Like the railway, the terminal company came under control of the Canadian Pacific, but went into receivership in 1894. The Rexford, Mont., station of the Great Northern Railway was established in 1903. It was closed in 1972 when the railroad was rerouted due to the flooding of the area behind the Libby Dam.
